Sending and Receiving Mail Using SSL with Outlook Express

SSL causes your passwords and the contents of your messages to be transmitted between your computer and mail server over an encrypted connection.

1. Open Outlook Express and click Tools/Accounts... from the menu bar to open the Internet Accounts window. Double-click your IMSS email account.

2. Click the Advanced tab. Click the check box underneath the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL). In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, type 465 as the port number. If port 465 doesn't work, you should try port 25.  If you are using IMAP, the Incoming mail port should set to 993.  If you are using POP, the Incoming mail port should be set to 995.

3. Click the Servers tab and in the section labeled Outgoing Mail Server, click the check box labeled My server requires authentication. Whether you are using imap-server.its.caltech.edu or pop-server.its.caltech.edu as your incoming email server, smtp-server.its.caltech.edu should be your outgoing email server. Click OK.

Note: For Security purposes, IMSS does not recommend saving usernames and password information but if you would like to do so, enter your password in the Password: field and click on the box labeled Remember password.
