Sending and Receiving Mail Using SSL with Outlook

SSL causes your passwords and the contents of your messages to be transmitted between your computer and the mail server over an encrypted connection.

1. Open Outlook and click Tools/E-mail Accounts… from the menu bar.

2. Make sure the View or change existing email accounts radio button is selected, then click the Next > button.

3. Double-click on your IMSS email account.

Note: For security purposes, IMSS does not recommend saving usernames and password information but if you would like to do so, check the box labeled Remember password within the Logon Information section and enter your Password.

4. Click on the More Settings… button in the bottom-right corner. Whether you are using imap-server.its.caltech.edu or pop-server.its.caltech.edu as your incoming email server, smtp-server.its.caltech.edu should be your outgoing email server.

5. Click the Advanced tab. If you are using IMAP, the port should be set to 993.  For POP, the port should be set to 995.  Click the check box underneath the Incoming server (IMAP or POP) labeled This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).

6. Click the check box underneath the Outgoing server (SMTP) labeled This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).

7. In the Outgoing server (SMTP) field, type 465 as the port number. If your Internet Service Provider blocks port 465 use port 25.

8. Click on the Outgoing Server tab.

9. Check the box labeled My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.

10. Click the OK button.

11. Click Next on the Internet Email Settings Window.

12. Click Finish.
