Windows File Server

Introduction

IMSS users will see several changes when working with the server hardware called FILES (files.caltech.edu). The following details some of the changes that users may notice.

(N:\\) Drive Mapping to Home Folder Share

When you access the mapped N:\\ drive to your home folder share, you will notice the network mapping username on 'files' (N:), which reflects the drive mapping to the file server, FILES (files.caltech.edu).

Contents In (N:\\) Drive Home Folder Share

When you access the root of the mapped N:\\ drive to your home folder share, you will notice specific files and folders that are used for the file system. These files - distinguished by the period in front of their name (e.g. .filename) - at the root of this drive should never be deleted, moved, or renamed. If for some reason, something does happen to these files and affects your work, please contact us at http://help.caltech.edu (request type IMSS-->Desktop Support-->Other)or x3500. While other optional files may appear in this folder (e.g. .muttrc and .pinerc in the image below), the default files will include:

  • .bash_login
  • .bashrc
