New Students Security
🎓 New to Caltech? Stay Secure from Day One
Welcome to Caltech! As you begin your academic journey, it's essential to protect your digital identity and the Institute's information assets. Follow these cybersecurity best practices to stay safe online and contribute to a secure campus environment:
🔐 Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Create passwords that are long, complex, and unique for each account. Avoid using personal information or reusing passwords across services. Consider using a password manager to securely store and generate strong passwords.
🛡️ Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Enable MFA on all your Caltech and personal accounts. MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification (like a code from your phone) in addition to your password.
🔄 Keep Your Devices Updated
Regularly install software updates and security patches for your operating system, apps, and browsers. Updates fix vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit.
⚙️ Follow Secure Configuration Guidelines
Use vendor-recommended security settings on your devices and applications. Disable unnecessary services and features, and configure firewalls and privacy settings appropriately.
💾 Back Up Your Data
Back up important files regularly to a secure location, such as Caltech-approved cloud storage or an encrypted external drive. This protects you from data loss due to hardware failure, theft, or ransomware.
🖥️ Use Antivirus and Approved Tools
Install and maintain reputable antivirus software. Only use software and tools approved by Caltech IT or your department to avoid introducing malware or unsupported applications.
🌐 Avoid Browsing on Critical Systems
Do not use critical systems (e.g., lab controllers, research instruments) for general internet browsing or email. These systems should be isolated and used strictly for their intended purpose.
🔒 Use Secure Remote Access
When accessing Caltech systems remotely, always use approved and encrypted channels such as VPN or SSH. Avoid using public Wi-Fi without a secure connection.
🔐 Encrypt Sensitive Data
Ensure that sensitive data is encrypted both in transit (e.g., during file transfers) and at rest (e.g., stored on your device). Use Caltech-approved encryption tools and services.
📢 Stay Informed
Complete required cybersecurity training and stay updated on emerging threats. Follow Caltech Cybersecurity alerts and participate in awareness campaigns to stay ahead of risks.
